Care and Use
Caring for Solid Wood, Made to Be Used
Every piece from Hoeksema Woodworking is crafted from solid hardwood and finished by hand. Because wood is a natural, living material, it responds to its environment and will continue to change subtly over time. With simple care, your piece will age beautifully and develop even more character with use.
Daily Use
My cutting boards and wood products are designed for everyday use—not display only.
Recommended use:
- Use for food preparation as intended
- Clean promptly after use
- Enjoy the natural feel and texture of solid wood
Avoid:
- Dishwashers
- Soaking or standing water
- Microwaves
- Prolonged exposure to heat
Water and heat are the only true enemies of solid wood.
Cleaning
After use:
- Wash gently with warm water and mild soap
- Wipe dry immediately with a towel
- Allow the board to air dry completely before storing
Never leave a board submerged or wet on a counter.
Oiling & Conditioning
Solid wood benefits from occasional oiling to maintain protection and richness.
How often:
- Once a month with regular use
- More often in dry climates or winter months
How to oil:
- Apply a food-safe mineral oil or board conditioner
- Rub evenly with a soft cloth
- Allow the oil to absorb for several hours or overnight
- Wipe away excess before use
This simple process helps prevent drying and enhances the wood’s natural grain.
Natural Variation & Movement
Each piece is unique. Variations in grain, color, knots, and subtle checking are natural characteristics of solid wood—not defects.
Wood may expand or contract slightly with changes in humidity. This is normal and expected. Proper care minimizes movement and ensures long-term durability.
Character marks are part of the story.
Storage Tips
- Store flat when possible
- Keep away from direct heat sources
- Allow airflow around the piece
If storing upright, rotate occasionally to promote even exposure.
A Piece That Grows With You
With regular use and basic care, your piece will continue to deepen in color, texture, and character. I believe the most meaningful objects are the ones that show their history—marks earned through use, not perfection preserved through avoidance.
If you ever have questions about care, I’m always happy to help.
